STRUCTURE AND CONSTRUCTION

The research areas concerning the study of the structural system of existing buildings and constructions, with particular emphasis on cultural heritage, concern the development of diagnostic investigation procedures and the implementation of numerical methods for the analysis of the seismic and static vulnerability of the single construction rather than of urban aggregates. The structural consolidation design of historic constructions is, therefore, based on the knowledge of the building and its history, on the knowledge of the geometries of the structural elements and of the construction techniques adopted; is based on an accurate analysis of potential phenomena of instability and degradation, as well on the investigation of the mechanical properties of the materials and of the soil on which the structural system has its foundations. All the interventions are aimed at guaranteeing respect for the historical/cultural value, authenticity, and permanence of the material and architectural testimonies of the historic buildings, based on the principles of minimal intervention and the decipherability of the new. The interventions also aim to optimize the material compatibility and the controllability of the intervention over time, as well as guaranteeing a good level of reversibility. The philosophy adopted to approach the project on a historically relevant construction is therefore that of preserving the existing one, by studying solutions in very close relation to the existing construction.
